Scottish Contingent Descends on Tallinn for Estonian International

8th January 2026 by Robert McLean

A strong Scottish contingent is in Tallinn this week as the Estonian International gets underway, marking the first tournament of 2026 for several players. The International Series event provides an important early-season opportunity to gain valuable match practice, ranking points and momentum heading into a busy year on the international circuit.

Matches are already in progress in the men’s singles qualifying draw, with Scottish players wasting no time in making their presence felt. Callum Smith produced an assured opening performance in the round of 64 qualifying, dispatching Lithuania’s Adam Narbutas-Jorgensen 21–10, 21–12. Smith looked sharp from the outset, controlling the rallies and setting a positive tone for the Scottish camp.

Also in action was Malik Clowes, who was promoted into the draw from the reserve list. Drawn against Latvia’s Toms Sala, Clowes showed moments of promise but ultimately went down in straight games, 21–9, 21–17, bowing out at the first hurdle.

There is plenty more Scottish interest still to come today, with Finlay Jack set to face Sweden’s Tim Mork in the round of 64 qualifying, while Matthew Waring takes on Poland’s Mateusz Danielak. Both players will be aiming to navigate their way through a competitive qualifying draw and progress deeper into the tournament.

Further success has already been recorded by James Robertson, who has booked his place in the qualifying round of 32 following a solid 21–18, 21–16 victory over Yu Cheng Chen of Chinese Taipei. Robertson’s composed performance ensured another Scottish name remains firmly in contention as the event continues.

With several matches still to be played and more Scottish players set to take to court over the coming days, the Estonian International promises to be an important early-season test against strong international opposition.

Scotland’s interest in the doubles begins tomorrow, with Josh Taylor & Evan Kenny set to open their campaign against the top seeds from England, Oliver Butler & Samuel Jones, in what promises to be a tough opening-round test.
