Scottish Open 2024: Abbie Brooks and Lauren Middleton qualify for womens singles main draw

It has been a successful start to the Scottish Badminton Open 2024 for Scotland’s women’s singles with Lauren Middleton and Abbie Brooks both moving through to the main draw.

Here at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Abbie Brooks was victorious in her second qualifying match of the day against Lisa Paula Bonnemann of Germany.

This fantastic win from Brooks means she will now advance to the next stage of the tournament.

The young Scot put her all into the match and had a really strong first set winning 21-8. She maintained her dominance in the second one taking the lead to win 21-12. After the game, the “absolutely delighted” Brooks, said: “I am super happy with that win, it’s really nice to get through to the main draw here at the Scottish Open.

“It’s my first ever international challenge main draw so getting through to that am just absolutely delighted. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome of the result.”

Brooks was an exciting addition to the competition after only recently being moved up from the reserves into the qualification draw. This year she has had some success at home this year after winning the Lanarkshire Open and the West of Scotland Championships. Brooks also competed at the Czech Open, Latvia International and Croatian International earlier this year.

Tomorrow she will take on Anna Tatranova from France in the second day of the championships.

At the same time, over on court 2, Lauren Middleton put up a strong fight to take victory against Jelena Buchberger of Croatia, in her final qualifying match of the day.

After losing the first set, the current national champion bounced back to win the second one 21-14. Into the last set of the game, Middleton held her game and continued to showcase her talent on court to win the final one 21-16.

Earlier today Middleton beat Yashica Racharla. After a close first set, Middleton fought back to win the second 21-14.

A relieved Middleton, said: “I just try and take it point for point every single time and try not to focus too much on the first set. It was done there’s no going back.”

She added that she feels “happy” to be in the main draw tomorrow after narrowly missing out last year.

This win allows Middleton to advance to the next stage of the tournament where she will play Chinese Taipei’s Yuan Chi Liao.
