Scottish Open 2024: First Scots through to the mixed doubles quarter finals

Mixed doubles pair Alexander Dunn and Julie MacPherson are the first Scots through to the quarter finals at the Scottish Badminton Open 2024.

It was a very closely matched game against Jonathan Bing Tsan Lai and Crystal Lai of Canada at the Emirates Arena on Friday afternoon.
The pairs kept each other on their toes with the Canadians winning the first set 21-17 and the Scots just edging ahead in the second, taking it 21-19.
Heading into the final set, neither pair managed to gain much of a lead. There were some great strikes from Dunn but the Canadians just kept catching up with them, matching each other point for point. Team Scotland finally reached match point with the others trailing just behind on 17. In a tense few final minutes the Canadians managed to get the score up to 18, then 19.
Dunn and Macpherson held their nerve and won, much to the excitement of the home crowd. They bested the Lais with a final score of 21-19.
“[We played] good enough, to be honest,” Dunn said after the match. “They played well, I think they were struggling to find our levels. We did have clear tactics, whether we used them correctly at the right times, probably not, but I’m proud of again how we fought and got through that match because it easily could’ve went the other way.”
“We’re obviously really happy to get there [the quarter finals],” MacPherson added. “I think the next match is going to be tough. I don’t think they played yet but I think either pair is going to be really tough. I think we’ll need to bring a better level to be able to put in a good fight tomorrow.”
