Scottish Open 2024: Matthew Waring into final round of mens singles qualification
Matthew Waring has taken his second victory of the day in the mens singles qualifying stages of the opening day of the Scottish Badminton Open 2024.
He stepped out strong onto the court to beat England’s Adam Shepherd in the third set.
Waring maintained a steady lead throughout the game, comfortably grasping the first set with a 21-13 win. However, an intense second set left the players battling it out to take the win. Shepherd managed to just take it as 24-22. A determined Waring fought back strong to take the final set 21-14.
Earlier today Waring played Irish international Matthew Cheung in an action-packed match. Similarly, he won the game in the third set.
In 2023, Waring was crowned winner of the Junior Performance Athlete of the Year with this being his second Scottish Open after he made his first debut in 2023. With his friends and family here to support him today, the crowd was with him every step of the game.
This was another triumphant win for Waring on the opening day of the tournament, proving that he is here to put up a fight. “I didn’t feel like I played my top level in that game however delighted to have fought hard for that one.”
He will play his third and final match of the day later tonight against Dominik Kwinta of Poland, which will determine who makes it through to the main draw. “I’m excited to keep playing in front of the home crowd.”
