Scottish Open 2024: Men’s doubles final hopes dashed for Grimley brothers
Brothers Christopher and Matthew Grimley’s Scottish Open journey has come to an end for this year. They lost out to French duo Leo Rossi and Eloi Adam in the men’s doubles semi-final on Saturday.
The pair brought lots of energy to their semi-final, with volleys so intense that one brother even ended up on the floor in the opening minutes. The French players began to lead but the twins slightly closed the gap again with the French hitting 11 and the Scots just behind on 9.
They equalised with 11 apiece but France’s points started to creep up again. Rossi and Adam developed a solid lead and took the first set 21-13.
In the second set the Grimley brothers came back out strong, scoring two points right off the bat. Powerful play from France saw them draw at 6 all and they continued to match each other’s points. An offside shuttle just gave the Scottish brothers the edge and they reached
11 with France right on their tails with 10.
There continued to be little difference between the teams as they scored well into the teens, both giving it their all. The strong support from the home crowd was palpable, even as France got two points up on them.
Tension grew as France hit match point, the brothers trailing behind on 17. The French held their nerve despite conceding one point and took the match in just two sets, scoring 21-18.
Tomorrow in the final they will go on to play the winners of this evening’s other semi-final – either Scotland’s other men’s duo Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle or William Kryger and Christian Faust from Denmark.
