Scottish Open 2024: Scottish top seeds through to the final 8 of mens doubles

Top seeds Christopher and Matthew Grimley take victory over Sweden’s Ludwig Axelsson and Jakob Ekman to make it to the quarter-finals of the mens doubles at the Scottish Open.

In the opening round the twins took an early lead, confidently staying ahead throughout winning 21-11 despite strong responses from the Swedes throughout.

The Grimleys started out the second set in a similar fashion to the first but the Swedes managed to equalise at 7-7 with the pairs proceeding to go point for point until the break at 11. Axelsson and Ekman continued their aggressive play and continued to match the Scot’s points well in to the teens. They were able to gain a two point lead at 20-17.

A hit to the net and an offside shuttle meant that the Grimleys were almost back in the game with 20-19, but a sneaky shot from the Swedes meant the set was theirs at 21-19.

Going into the final game it was all to play for. The Grimleys re-energised and went up three points to nil. They begun to pull away but the Swedish weren’t giving up taking the score to 9-4. Midway through medics attended to Axelsson, seeing to his knee as the game’s stakes upped with the Grimleys leading at the break 11-4.

The Scots finally took the win at 21-13, moving through to next round.

Speaking to the Irish silver medalists after
“We’re happy with our performance, the Swedish played really well, we struggled in the second set, they really managed to get on top of us and we struggled to get on top of our quality and our lifts. We reset in the third set and it was a good wrap.”

Asking about their home support the boys were excited to play in front of their friends and family. “It’s always nice to hear a few voices in the crowd and that extra boost so we’re looking forward to tomorrow.”
