Scottish Open Quarter Finals round up
It’s another full day of action at the Emirates Arena with day three of the Scottish Badminton Open 2024 off to a strong start.Saturday at the Emirates Arena has seen a jam-packed day of badminton. Here’s everything you need to know about the quarter finals if you missed out on the action.
Mixed Doubles
The morning kicked off with the mixed doubles quarter finals on all four courts. The level of play was high across all the games with a lot of the players very evenly matched.
Christian Faust Kjaer and Maiken Fruergaard from Denmark faced off against English players Robin Harper and Abbygael Harris. The teams began by matching each other point by point but the Danes broke away and took the first set 21-16.
They continued to lead well into the second set, reaching 11 while Harper and Harris were only on 6. They continued to maintain a safe lead with the English pair still on single digits.
The Danish team quickly reached 21 and the match was theirs in two sets. From the Netherlands, Ties Van der Lecq and Deborah Jillie took on another English pair, Samuel Jones and Annie Lado.
Jones and Lado just beat their opponents 21-18 in the first set. They were evenly matched again in the second set, with the English players able to gain a slight lead but the Netherlands equalised at 19.
Jones and Lado were the first to match point but the Dutch team equalised again, even getting up to 21-20 and taking a very tense win at 22-20.
In the third set, the English players came back even more determined and developed an early lead but Van der Lecq and Jillie equalised at 9 all.
England reached 11 first and began to rack up points. Once again, the Dutch pair equalised 17 all. They continued to match each other point for point, but England finally took the win 23-21.
Ruben Garcia and Lucia Rodriguez of Spain played against Germany’s Patrick Volkmann and Franziska Volkmann in yet another evenly matched game.
It was a very close first set but the Germans managed to take it 21-17. The Spanish pair developed an early lead in the second set and won it 21-10.
The third set was equally matched again, but the Spanish began to lead slightly and safely reached match point at 20-16. With a score of 21-18, Garcia and Rodriguez won overall.
Scottish pair Alexander Dunn and Julie Macpherson beat fellow Scotsman Matthew Grimley and Denmark’s Sara Thygesen in just two sets. Scotland, England, Denmark and Spain are now all through to the mixed doubles semi finals.
Mens Singles
In the men’s singles, Belgium’s Julien Carraggi bested Frenchman Enogat Roy in two straight sets, 21-3 and 21-12.
Ethan Rose of England beat German Matthias Kicklitz 21-15 in the first set. Kicklitz was refreshed in their second set, coming out on top with 21-14. In a tight final set, Rose managed to cinch the win 21-16. He will now play Carraggi in the semi-finals.
France’s Arnaud Merkle had a strong start against Jai Wei Joel Koh of Singapore, winning the first set 21-12. The second and third sets were close, but Koh’s renewed energy meant he took them 21-18 and 21-17 consecutively.
Finally German Fabian Roth went up against the Dutch player Joran Kweekel. A tense first set saw Roth just manage to win 22-20. Kweekel then managed to claw back the win, scoring 21-13 and 21-16 in the final sets. Next he will face Koh in the men’s singles semi-finals.
Womens Singles
Looking to the women’s singles, Julie Dawall Jakobsen from Denmark beat Bulgaria’s Kaloyana Nalbantova 21-16, 13-21, 21-17.
Huang Yu-Hsun of Chinese Taipei bested Danish player Anna Siess Ryberg 17-21, 21-11, 21-19. She will next play Jakobsen.
Malaysian athlete Kisona Selvaduray beat Qi Xuefei of France 11-21, 21-11, 21-1.1
Huang Ching Ping from Chinese Taipei won against Dane Amalie Schulz 21-17, 12-21, 21-16. Next she will go up against Selvaduray in the semi-finals.
Womens Doubles
The women’s doubles quarter finals saw Debora Jillie from the Netherlands and Danish player Sara Thygesen face Canadians Jackie Dent and Crystal Lai. They narrowly lost the first set 17-21 but won the final two 21-15 and 21-10
Germans Julia Meyer and Leona Michalski went up against Julie Finnie-Ipsen and Mai Surrow of Denmark. The Danes won in two straight sets, quickly beating them 21-13 and 21-14. They will play Jillie and Thygesen next.
Another Danish pair, Natasja P Anthonisen and Maiken Fruergaard, also saw success in the quarter finals. They quickly beat Chung Kan-Yu and Jia Yin Lin from Chinese Taipei in two sets, 21-8 and 21-15.
English players Chloe Birch and Estelle Van Leeuwen played Orla Flynn and Moya Ryan from Ireland. The England players took an early lead and reached 11 while the others were only on 5. They quickly won the first set 21-8 and the second followed similarly with a score
of 21-12. Next they’re up against Anthonisen and Fruergaard
