Scottish Squad Take on World-Class Field at Indian Open Super 750
13th January 2026 by Robert McLean
The Senior National Squad are in New Delhi this week for the Indian Open, a prestigious HSBC BWF World Tour Super 750 event and one of the standout tournaments on the BWF calendar.
Scottish interest was immediately in focus on the opening day, with Kirsty Gilmour facing a stern test against Denmark’s Line Højmark Kjærsfeldt in a repeat of their recent European Championship final. The Scot produced an impressive start to the encounter, dictating play with confidence to take the opening game 21–14. However, Kjærsfeldt responded with resilience and tactical discipline, taking the next two games 21–14, 21–17 to halt Gilmour’s progress in a high-quality contest.
Despite that result, there remains strong Scottish representation to come as the opening rounds continue. In women’s doubles, Ciara Torrance and Julie MacPherson are set to take to the court against an exciting young Japanese pairing, Ririna Hiramoto and Kokona Ishikawa. The match is scheduled as the eighth match on Court 3 and promises to be a challenging test against one of Asia’s emerging combinations.
Attention then turns to mixed doubles action tomorrow, where Alex Dunn and Julie MacPherson will begin their Indian Open campaign. The pair arrive in New Delhi in confident form after a strong finish to last season and will be aiming to carry that momentum into one of the toughest events on the tour.
The squad is once again supported by coach Robert Blair, whose experience at the highest level will be vital as players navigate a demanding draw against world-class opposition.
