Scottish Stars Show Fighting Spirit in Krakow

17th September 2026 by Robert McLean

It was another busy day of action for our Scottish stars in Krakow, with all four singles matches now concluded and plenty of positive performances to take from the day.

Ishbel McCallister and Josh Taylor produced an excellent display in the mixed doubles, pushing 7th seeds and home pairing Sobolewski and Sobolewska all the way in a thrilling contest.

The match could have gone either way, with both pairs showing great composure throughout. In the end, it was the Polish pairing who held their nerve when it mattered most, edging a dramatic deciding game 22–20.

There was a tough afternoon for Matthew Waring, who arrived in Poland in excellent form. Matthew battled hard, but experienced Finnish opponent Melleri proved too strong on the day, taking the match 21–16, 21–11.

The final Scottish match of the day saw James Robertson put in a gutsy performance against 3rd seed and home favourite Szymanowski. James competed strongly in both games and pushed his opponent all the way, but was ultimately edged out 21–18, 23–21.

While there was disappointment in the results, there were plenty of encouraging performances from the Scottish contingent, with the players continuing to compete strongly against seeded and home opposition.

Doubles Take Centre Stage Tomorrow

Attention now turns to the doubles, with both our men’s and women’s pairings set to take centre stage tomorrow.

Brooke and Ishbel will face home pairing Czuchra and Stokfisz, while Evan and Josh take on Slovakian opponents Pavlik and Polacek.

Both matches promise to be closely contested, as our Scottish players will be looking to progress to the last 16 and beyond.

Good luck to all our players for tomorrow’s action!
