Serving Pride and Smashes: Scotland to Host Inclusive LGBT+ Badminton Tournament
A vibrant and inclusive badminton tournament is set to take place in Ravenscraig this month on the 24th May, designed to celebrate LGBTQ+ participation in sport while smashing barriers on and off the court.
Organised be a few passionate members of the badminton community and supported by Badminton Scotland, the tournament promises to be more than just a competitive weekend. It’s about creating a safe, welcoming space for LGBTQ+ players of all backgrounds and skill levels, whether you’re chasing medals or just chasing shuttles for fun.
As one organiser fondly recalled about the tournament’s origins having been encouraged by friends who run a LGBTQ+ tournament down south that they love attending. “I never decided—the boys down in Bristol said, ‘Why do you not organise a tournament in Scotland?'” That encouragement kick-started what’s now shaping up to be a standout event on the inclusive badminton calendar.
A Tournament with a Mission
The event, originally launched over ten years ago and now revived post-pandemic, will offer multiple playing grades from A to C- (beginners) across singles, doubles, and mixed categories. “We’re trying to give everybody an opportunity.” the organiser explained, highlighting the event’s commitment to inclusivity.
But the emphasis isn’t just on competition. “What we’re aiming for is to make it fun, fun, fun.” From quirky awards to a lively after-party and medal ceremony, the tournament celebrates community spirit as much as sporting success.
Not Just a Game, A Community
For many LGBTQ+ players, traditional club environments can feel unwelcoming or isolating. This event aims to change that narrative. “When you’re looking at LGBT, some don’t want to come into a main badminton club because they feel isolated. This is about the social side,” one organiser said, underlining the importance of building spaces where everyone feels they belong.
The social touches are part of what makes this tournament unique. “We provide lunches. We give them a gift. We do a tote bag with water bottles, Iron Brew, Tea Cakes, and a Scottish theme.”
And beyond logistics, it’s the atmosphere that truly sets this event apart.
“We want people to feel part of something. Whether you’re there to win or just have a good time, this tournament is about being included, being welcomed, and being celebrated.”
Looking Ahead: A Bigger Vision
The excitement around this tournament is already inspiring wider ambitions. “We’re looking at maybe doing a Four Nations LGBT tournament, and we have recently opened up a badminton club in North Lanarkshire and hope to grow this,” said the organiser. With coaching support already lined up and growing international interest, from countries like Germany, Denmark, and Ireland- the future is bright.
