Silver Medal Success for Grimley Twins in Baku
10th February 2026 by Robert McLean
It was a successful return to the international circuit for Matt and Chris Grimley, who claimed a silver medal at the Azerbaijan International in Baku last week, delivering an impressive performance in a highly competitive men’s doubles field.
Top seeds in the draw, the Scottish twins carried the weight of expectation well and lived up to their billing with a composed and consistent run to the final. Their campaign began on Friday with a solid straight-sets victory over Czech pairing Vojtěch Havlíček and Tomáš Švejda, closing out the match 21–19, 21–13.
Saturday proved to be a demanding day, with both the quarter-final and semi-final on the schedule. In the quarter-finals, the Grimleys were once again in control, overcoming Japan’s Shuntaro Mezaki and Tsubasa Yoshida 21–19, 21–11 to book their place in the last four.
Awaiting them in the semi-finals was a tricky matchup on paper against Malaysia’s world-ranked No.73 duo Yi Sheng Lau and Tze Jian Lim. However, the twins arguably produced their best badminton of the tournament, delivering a confident and clinical display to dispatch the talented Malaysians in straight sets, 21–13, 21–16.
The final set up a compelling Scotland v England showdown, with England’s rising stars Alex Green and Zach Russ standing in the way of gold. Despite a spirited effort from the Grimleys, it was the English pair who produced a top-quality performance to take the title, winning 21–19, 21–17. It is a matchup that looks set to feature regularly on the international circuit in the years to come.
Overall, it was a fantastic tournament for Matt and Chris Grimley, marking a strong return to form and momentum on the IC circuit. The twins now turn their focus back to BWF HSBC World Tour level events, with their next challenge coming at the German Open in Mülheim an der Ruhr, starting on 24 February.
