SSBU 2014 Age Group event

The first SSBU event of 2026 took place at Penicuik on 3^rd January. 25 players took part in the 2014 Age Group event. 14 boys took part in the singles and the top four seeds all won their pools to progress to the A knock-out. In the quarter final Nick Yan defeated Daniel Soflano 22-10, 15-21, 21-13 but the other 3 seeds reached the semi finals. Nick lost 21-14, 21-10 to top seeded Matthew Gajri while Luke Jobson found second seeded Joshua Gajri just too strong so the Gajri brothers took each other on in the final. In the final fortunes changed rapidly with Joshua taking the first game very quickly 21-5.  Matthew fought back in the second game winning the set 21-14. However it was Joshua’s turn to take the trophy with a 21-11 victory in the deciding set.

There were 11 girls playing singles so there were 3 pools. In pool C the winner was unseeded Arisha Murkute which left Magizhini Parthiban playing in the consolation event. The top 2 seeds made their way successfully to the final without dropping a set. The final was close with Ivy Yu defeating Ella Luo 21-18,21-18.

6 pairs took part in the boys doubles which was played as 2 pools of 3. The two seeded pairs won their pools but Luke Jobson & Daniel Soflano then had a hard match against Nick Yan and Ojas Pravenn in the semi-final. It was only 2 games but Luke and Daniel won the second end 26-24. In the final Luke and Daniel took on the Gajris with Matthew & Joshua winning 21-17,21-12.

The girls doubles was a single pool of 5 pairs. Ivy Yu was a late pairing with Mia Kuo and this pairing proved to be very strong and in the final pool game the beat Niamh Kerr and Ella Luo to take top spot.

Next weekend SSBU are at Wishaw on Saturday for the 2008 and 2011 Age Group event and then back at Penicuik on Sunday for the Junior Inter Area.
