SSBU Event – 07/02/26
The SSBU 2013 Age Group Event took place at Wishaw Sports Centre on Saturday 7th February. 40 players took part.
There were 27 entries for the boys singles so there were 7 pools. Unfortunately Arnav Apte injured his ankle the night before the event and was unable to take part. The other 7 seeded players all made it safely through the pools to the A knock-out and to the quarter finals. Cyril Chim had a good tournament beating top seed Sumanth Prakash 21-18, 21-9 in the semi-final. In the bottom half of the draw second seed Saathvik Saravanan beat Joshua Gajri 21-6, 21-11. The final was very close with never more than a couple of points separating the players but Saathvik was the eventual winner with a 21-19, 23-21 score line.
The girls singles also went very much to plan. 13 girls took part with the 4 seeded players all reaching the semi-final. Anvita Awashi had a fairly easy route to the final beating Alexa Kerr 21-5, 21-3 and Lucie Sneddon 21-7,21-10. Ivy Yu had a slightly harder time defeating Arisha Murkute 21-17,21-18 in the semi. Anvita went on to win the event beating Ivy 21-8, 21-19 in the final.
With 9 pairs in the boys doubles there were 2 pools with 4 pairs progressing to the A knock out. Top seeds Sumanth Prakash & Saathvik Saravanan beat Shun Yin Kwok &Tsz-Hin Wong 21-11,21-17 in the top semi while in the bottom semi Cyril Chim continued to have a good event by pairing with Daniel Soflano to beat Matthew & Joshua Gajri 21-15, 21-18. The final was the last match of the day so of course went to three ends with close scores throughout all three sets. Sumanth & Saathvik eventually won 21-19, 18-21, 21-15.
The girls doubles was a single pool of 5 pairs. There were quite a number of close matches but none went to three ends. The decisive match was between Anvita & Ivy and Sharanya Dharerao & Shreeys Pandey with Anvita & Ivy winning this match 21-7, 21-5. Second seeds Varshari Ezhilarasan & Lucie Sneddon took the consolation medals by finishing third in the pool.
The next SSBU event is the secondary quaichs at Scotstoun on Wednesday 25th February followed by the Secondary Championships at Kilmarnock on 7th & 8th March.
