SSBU Event – 12/09/26

The first event of the new SSBU season took place at Penicuik on Saturday 12th September. This was for players born 2013 or later and it was a busy event. With the hall only available until 4 p.m. first games had to go on court at 9.15. There were 7 pools of 4 in the boys singles with the six seeded players getting through to the A knock-out. The 7th seeded player Daniel Soflano unfortunately had to pull out through injury just before the event. Again due to shortage of time the knock-out was played as best of 3 games to 15 points. Jai Wilkes had a good tournament. He had come top of his pool by beating 2nd seed Joshua Gajri 21-17 and in the knock-out quarter final he came up against Matthew Gajri winning this match 9-15,15-6, 15-12. However Cyril Chim proved just too strong in the semi final winning 16-14, 15-11. Meanwhile in the top half of the draw Joshua Gajri had a tough quarter final against Vivaan Pritam taking 26 minutes to win 13-15,15-11, 15-7. His semi-final was a minute longer but here he was against top seed Saathvik Karthik with Saathvik taking the match 16-14, 12-15, 15-8. Saathvik went on to win the final 15-13, 15-8.

There were 12 girls in singles event and again the seeded players all came safely through their pools. In the top half of the draw Anvita Awasthi beat Tin Nam Lai 16-14, 15-12 in the semi while in the bottom half Shreeya Pandey defeated Lucie Sneddon 15-5, 19-17. In the top half of the draw. Anvita won the final 15-4, 15-8.

The boys doubles had 11 pairs with Saitj Ganti stepping in to replace Daniel in a pairing with Saathvik. Again the seeds came safely through the pools. Because of time pressure the quarter fianls and semi finals were played as one game. In the top semi Saathvik and Seitej beat Elliott Campbell & Ethan Roberts 21-18, while in the other semi Cyril Chim & Ruben du Plessis beat the Gajris 21-19. Cyril and Ruben went on to win the final 15-7, 15-12.

There were 5 pairs in the girls doubles. The longest match of the day took 43 minutes with Magizhini Parthiban & Haasika Vasanth beating Kimberly Chow & Dhiya Kumar 14-16, 17-15, 16-14. However Anvita Awasthi & Shreeya Pandey proved too strong for all the other players winning the event without losing a single set. Runners up were Tin Nam & Lucie.

The next SSBU event is the Under 15 Age Group on 31st October.
