SSBU Primary Championships 02/05/26
The SSBU Primary Championships were held at Scotstoun on Saturday 2nd May. 72 players were entered but a few were unable to play on the day. The largest event was the boy’s singles where there were 10 pools. The top 2 players from each pool progressed to the A knock-out while the remaining players played in the consolation event. All of the seeded players came safely through their pools although 9/10 seed Casey Brown finished as runner up to Advik Nagar in pool K. The first upset was in the quarter final where Matthew Gajri suffered an ankle injury during his match with Daniel Soflano and had to concede the match. Meanwhile brother Joshua made his way to the final defeating Vivaan Pritam and Luke Jobson on the way. Meanwhile Daniel came up against top seed Sumanth Prakash in the top semi-final with Sumanth winning 21-7, 21-10. Sumanth went on to win the final 21-14, 21-12.
There were 6 pools in the girl’s singles, but unfortunately seeded Ella Luo had to pull out the night before the event with an injury. The other pools were all won by the seeded player with Maggie Parthibhan taking advantage of the slot vacated by Ella to reach the top semi-final. Sharanya Dharerao had a long tussle with second seed Shreeya Pandey eventually winning 21-14, 15-21, 21-15. Top seed Arisha Murkute meantime beat Maggie in the other semi-final and went on to win the final 21-3, 21-15.
In the doubles events players had to play with a partner from their own school and so entries were low. 12 pairs were entered for the boys event but there were 3 withdrawals fortunately one from each pool. The top 2 pairs reached the final with Matthew Gajri managing to cope with his ankle injury. This time the Gajris were just too strong for Sumanth who paired up with Oliver Lee but lost the final 21-15, 21-11.
There were only 3 pairs in the girls doubles so this was played as a single pool. Sharanya paired up with Ananya Sonawane and this pair won the event by winning two close matches. They beat Connie Mackenzie and Annie Macritchie 21-18,21-16 and Eloise Cameron and Elisha Chen 21-13, 24-22.
The final event of the season will be the primary quaich which will take place at Wishaw Sports Centre on Wednesday 6th May.
