SSBU Primary Inter Area 14/03/26

5 teams of primary aged pupils gathered at Wishaw Sports Centre on Saturday 14th March to take part in the Primary Inter Area event. This was played as a pool with each team playing all other teams. There were 11 games in each match – mixed doubles, followed by 3 boys singles, 3 girls singles, 2 boys doubles and 2 girls doubles. In the first round of matches Ayrshire took on Borders and Lanark played Glasgow. Ayrshire and Borders were quite closely matched with Ayrshire winning the match 7-4 with Glasgow beating Lanark 11-0. Lanark fared no better in the second round of matches losing 11-0 to the Lothian team. Meanwhile Glasgow inflicted the same scoreline on the Ayrshire team.  It was becoming clear that Lothian and Glasgow would as usual be taking the top 2 spots and leaving the other teams fighting for 3rd place.

In the third round of matches Ayrshire’s Shreeya Pandey took the first point off the Lothian team with a 21-11 victory over Varsha Ezhilarasan but Lothian still won this match by 10 games to 1. Glasgow inflicted another 11-0 victory on the Borders team. On to round 4 where Lothian again lost the first girls singles with Gemma Campbell gaining a 22-20 victory over Tilly Hart but Lothian again won the match 10 games to 1.  Ayrshire meanwhile had a very tight match against the Lanark Team with the result only deided on the last match. Ayrshire 6, Lanark 5 but games scores included a 24-22, and two 25-23s.

Going in to the last round Glasgow had not lost a single game and Lanark and Borders were playing to decide 4th & 5th place. Ayrshire were already guaranteed the third place. Borders beat Lanark by 7 games to 4. It wasn’t known at the time but the deciding match in the final was actually the mixed doubles which was played first. Lothian won all the boys games and Glasgow all the girls games so the decisive match and the closest score in the final was the 21-15 victory for Matthew Gajri & Varsha Ezhilrasaran over Advik Nagar & Ella Luo. 6 games to 5 and the winners were Lothian.

All the players enjoyed the matches and many will be back next week for the 2015 Age Group event.
