SSBU Round Up: Secondary Quaich

On Wednesday 28th February 12 teams gathered at the National Badminton Centre to take part in the secondary quaich competition. There were 6 teams in the junior event and 6 in the senior. There were 2 pools of 3 for each event with play offs to decide winners and places.

In the senior event Pool A contained Elgin Academy, Berwickshire High and Merchiston Castle/St. George’s. The Elgin team were one girl short and had to concede the second girls double in every tie. They were still a very strong team and having defeated Berwickshire had a very close tie against Merchiston Castle/St George’s – the match sore being 5 games all. On countback Merchiston Castle/St. George’s went through to play the winners of the other pool to decide the champions. This pool was also close with a 5 all tie between George Watson’s and High School of Glasgow, but the pool was won by last year’s junior winners Williamwood High. In the final things were again close with the match score standing at 4 games all with just the 2 girls doubles to go. Iona Aitken & Emily Lee of Williamwood beat Chloe Hu & Deepti Vijayakumar 21-17 to take the lead leaving an exciting finish between Hasini Kalva & Joy Mo and Rachel Jackson & Christine Sang to decide the winners. Hasina & Joey won the game 21-19 to give Williamwood the title.

The junior pools were not quite so tight with Elgin Academy only losing 2 matches in their 2 pool games to win pool B and Stewart’s Melville College also only losing 2 games in their 2 matches. The Elgin team was made up of players from the teams who had won the primary quaich for West End Primary over the last few years and they proved to be very strong winning the final by losing just one game.
