Statement from Badminton Scotland on the passing of Sir Craig Reedie
Badminton Scotland is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sir Craig Reedie, a towering figure in Scottish and international sport and a former President of Badminton Scotland whose impact on our sport will endure for generations.
Sir Craig served as Chair of Badminton Scotland from 1977 to 1979 with distinction, helping to guide and shape the organisation during a period of significant development. His leadership, vision and unwavering commitment to badminton in Scotland laid strong foundations for the growth of the sport at all levels — from grassroots participation to elite performance.
Beyond his role within Badminton Scotland, Sir Craig was one of the most influential figures in global sport. As President of the Badminton World Federation, he played a pivotal role in expanding the reach and profile of badminton worldwide, championing its inclusion and growth across new territories. His work ensured that badminton continued to thrive as a truly global sport, accessible to millions. Latterly he served as the president of the World Anti-Doping Agency, was chairman of the British Olympic Association and a vice-president of and a serving representative on, the International Olympic Committee.
Sir Craig’s legacy within Scotland is perhaps most visibly embodied in the Sir Craig Reedie Badminton Centre — a lasting tribute to his dedication and passion for the sport. The centre stands as a hub for excellence, development and community engagement, inspiring current and future generations of players to pursue the sport he loved so deeply.
Badminton Scotland Chair Kevin Scott said:
“We are profoundly saddened by the loss of Sir Craig Reedie. His contribution to badminton in Scotland and across the world cannot be overstated. As President he brought ambition and integrity to our organisation, helping to shape the direction of our sport for years to come. His influence extended far beyond administration — he was a true advocate for badminton and for sport as a force for good.
“The Sir Craig Reedie Badminton Centre is a fitting and lasting testament to his legacy. It represents everything he believed in: opportunity, excellence, and the power of sport to bring people together. On behalf of everyone at Badminton Scotland, we extend our deepest condolences to his wife Lady Rosemary, family friends and all who had the privilege of working with him.”
Sir Craig Reedie will be remembered not only for his remarkable achievements, but for his dedication, leadership and enduring contribution to badminton in Scotland and around the world.
