Team Scotland at the U15 Home Nations Quadrangular – a weekend filled with team support and strong performances

Team Scotland produced a weekend of determined performances at the U15s Home Nations Quadrangular, facing Ireland, Wales, and England with pride and spirit. Team Manager Karen Stalker praised the players: “They all performed to the best of their abilities, they tried really hard, and the team support was excellent.”

The team consisted of Melrick Dsouza, Dylan Jia, Nathan Luo, Calum Tsang, Yingfan Wang, Emily Jobson, Emma Joshua, Elona Kennedy, Jaagruti Mannem and Zoe Tait with a range of experience playing quadrangualrs before.

Opening Match: Ireland 6–3 Scotland
Scotland fought a close battle against Ireland, with doubles evenly split early on. Zoe Tait secured a strong singles win, but despite Jaagruti Mannem’s three-set thriller, Ireland pulled ahead, eventually sealing the tie through a mixed doubles victory. Stalker reflected: “A bit disappointed against Ireland but they gave 100% effort — credit to Ireland.”

Second Match: Scotland 7–2 Wales
Scotland bounced back strongly, dominating all four doubles matches and sealing victory with commanding singles performances from Yingfan Wang, Jaagruti Mannem, and Zoe Tait.

Final Match: England 7–2 Scotland
Against a powerful England side, Scotland showed impressive spirit. Calum Tsang delivered a standout win against England’s number one seed Olaf Kwincien, while Nathan Luo and Jaagruti Mannem wrapped up the campaign with a thrilling mixed doubles victory and a performance the team manager was pleased with

“Against England I thought the team raised their game even further and a really solid performance against England which is something they should be very proud of because England came with a very strong team. Calum had a good singles win over the England number one seed and in the mixed doubles a good win as well with Jaagruti.”

Individual Events

Moving into the individual events on Saturday and Sunday, Scotland continued to shine, competing strongly across all five categories and securing medals in four.

Boys Captain Calum Tsang took three bronze medals home in the boys singles, boys doubles alongside partner Nathan Luo and mixed doubles with partner Jaagruti Mannem.

“The support was great and the atmosphere was really fun. I’m really happy I got three medals, I was trying to aim higher but didn’t quite get there but I tried my hardest.”

The other bronze medals went to boys doubles pair Melrick Dsouza and Dylan Jia (with Scotland coming tantalisingly close to an all Scotland boys final) and Jaagruti Mannem in the girls singles.

Speaking to the girls’ captain Emma Joshua, she was pleased how the team rallied together “I think the weekend went really well and everyone enjoyed it, the atmosphere was great because everyone was being super supportive and encouraging of each other”

Coach Sarah Sidebottom was full of praise for the young team:
“We had some really good three-set wins like in the mixed Zoe and Yingfan had an epic three-setter. I was really impressed by the younger ones who haven’t played a quad before – they really rose to the occasion. They had no fear and absolutely went for it. We had some brilliant semi-finals, really close ones too, there were such tight margins between bronze to gold but we did well to medal and I think we won in team support.”

Both Stalker and Sidebottom highlighted the exceptional camaraderie and support within the squad throughout the weekend.
“It’s been a real team effort, real team support the whole weekend – you couldn’t fault them,” said Stalker. “Every day they grew in confidence and showed their full potential that they train every day for. We said that to them: be proud and go out and show them what you can do — and they did that, so credit to them!”
