Thailand Open Preview

11th May 2026 by Robert McLean

The Asian leg of the badminton calendar gets underway this week as Scotland’s leading stars head to Patumwan for the TOYOTA Thailand Open, with a strong Scottish contingent ready to test themselves against world-class opposition in Super 500 competition.

With valuable ranking points and momentum on offer early in the 2026 season, the tournament presents another major opportunity for Scotland’s players to build on a promising start to the year against many of the sport’s top-ranked pairs. Accompanied by coach Robert Blair, the squad will be aiming to make an impact as the Asian swing begins.

Scottish involvement starts immediately on Tuesday with two doubles pairings facing tough opening-round encounters.

First onto court are Ciara Torrance and Julie MacPherson, who begin their women’s doubles campaign as the 11th match on Court One. The Scottish pair face a stern challenge against Chinese Taipei duo Hu and Jheng, currently ranked 31 in the world. Torrance and MacPherson have continued to gain valuable experience on the international circuit over the past year and will look to produce a strong performance against higher-ranked opposition as they seek a positive start in Thailand.

The final match of the day on Court Four sees Alex Dunn and Adam Pringle take on another difficult draw against Malaysia’s Tan and Azriyn, who arrive at the tournament ranked 25th in the world. Dunn and Pringle will need to be at their sharpest against one of the strongest men’s doubles pairings in the draw, but the Scottish duo will hope recent performances and growing chemistry on court can help them challenge the seeded Malaysians.

Attention then turns to Wednesday, when more Scottish interest enters the competition. Christopher Grimley and Matthew Grimley begin their men’s doubles campaign looking to continue their development on the international stage. The twins have enjoyed steady progress in recent seasons and will be eager to make their mark in one of the strongest events on the BWF World Tour calendar outside the elite tiers.

There will also be mixed doubles action for Dunn and MacPherson, with the experienced Scottish pairing beginning their campaign on Wednesday. Having competed together extensively on the international circuit, the duo will hope their understanding and composure can help them navigate a challenging field packed with established world-class partnerships.

The TOYOTA Thailand Open represents an important stop in a demanding run of Asian tournaments, with players facing both elite opposition and difficult conditions as they compete in one of badminton’s most competitive regions. Strong performances this week could provide a significant boost heading into the remainder of the international swing and the busy summer schedule ahead.
