Thailand Open Review

18th May 2026 by Robert McLean

The TOYOTA Thailand Open proved to be a hugely positive week for the Grimley Twins, who delivered some of their best performances yet at elite level competition to reach the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles draw.

The Scottish pair opened the tournament in emphatic fashion, defeating Vietnam’s Tran and Nguyen 21-8, 21-19 with a dominant display. They carried that momentum into the last 16, producing another outstanding performance to overcome world number 40 Malaysian pair Teo and Chia 26-24, 21-10.

Friday’s quarter-final presented the twins with their toughest challenge yet against world number 9 pairing Goh and Izzuddin of Malaysia. In a high-quality contest, the Scots pushed one of the world’s top combinations all the way before narrowly losing in three sets, capping off an impressive week in Bangkok.

It was a challenging tournament overall for the rest of the Scottish squad, with several difficult draws and demanding playing conditions throughout the week.

Ciara Torrance and Julie MacPherson produced a strong showing against world number 31 pair Hu and Jheng of Chinese Taipei, eventually losing 21-16, 21-18 after a competitive performance.

Alex Dunn and Adam Pringle also battled hard in men’s doubles against 5th seeds Tan and Azriyn of Malaysia, going down 21-11, 21-15.

Dunn returned to court in the mixed doubles alongside Julie MacPherson, where they faced home favourites Oupthong and Sudjaipraparat. After taking the opening game, the Scottish duo were edged out in a hard-fought three-game encounter, with the Thai pair eventually prevailing 17-21, 21-19, 21-13.

Despite the tough competition, the squad can take great pride from their performances against some of the world’s best players. Credit also goes to coach Robert Blair for his efforts throughout the week as the team now faces a quick turnaround, travelling straight to Kuala Lumpur for the PERODUA Malaysia Masters, which begins tomorrow.
