The Dundee Badminton League is back

The Dundee Area Badminton leagues were up and running again on Sunday with the first round of fixtures in the Gents and ladies leagues.

The Gents and Ladies doubles leagues continue to go from strength to strength, with an extra Division in each this season.

In Ladies league Division 1 there was an exciting seaside derby between Carnoustie and David Lloyd 1, which went to the final round of games, with Carnoustie’s Maria Boyd and Fiona Cameron clinching a 3-2 win in the penultimate game with a close fought 21-18, 21-18 win. Last season’s top player Maria was in cracking form again with 3 wins.

There was another Angus derby in Gents Division 1, where an unfortunate injury to Forfar’s Callum Davidson in Game 2, meant that a very tight 24-22, 21-19 win by Graeme Russo and Lachlan Mulford in the opening game was enough to clinch a 4-2 victory for Kirriemuir with Forfar having to also concede Callum’s other 2 games.

In the new ladies Division 2, Dundee University had a 5-1 win over debutants David Lloyd 2, although this one also wasn’t decided until the final round of games.  Daisy Barrow and Eequing Thee were the star students with 3 wins each.

There was an intriguing Gents Division 2 tussle between Carnoustie and David Lloyd 1 who were both in the top Division last season.    It was 1-1 after the first round of games, with David Lloyd edging 2-1 ahead going into the last two games, which they won both of to clinch victory, with a 21-5, 21-8 win by Ayden Greensmith and Joe Robb proving decisive in the penultimate game.

In Gents Division 3, Forfar 2 were also hampered by the earlier injury to Callum Davidson who was due to double up and therefore started 3-0 down. This proved too much for them to overcome as they went down 4-1 to Dundee University.

In the new Gents Division 4, a busy day for the David Lloyd teams saw their 2nd team go down 3-0 to debutants Arbroath.  This was another match which wasn’t decided until the final round of games however with Cameron Watt and Mike Ramsay clinching the victory with a 21-19, 21-17 win in the penultimate game.
