Mens Singles
Callum Smith is the man to beat in the Scottish National Championships, looking to seal half a decade of dominance with a fifth consecutive mens singles national title. Smith has gone from strength to strength last year across multiple continents, taking his first International Medal with silver at the Kampala International in Uganda, a quarterfinal in both Canada and Iceland before taking down an Olympian in Ireland and taking his first wildcard spot in the Scottish Open.
Angus Meldrum sits in second seed with 2024 marking a year of international travel for the 20 year old, competing in International tournaments across Europe including Estonia, Portugal, Slovakia, Finland, Denmark, Lithuania and France, with a particularly good run in the Croatian International battling through four rounds of qualification to make it into the main draw. Meldrum’s efforts abroad will be brought into full affect as he looks to better his silver medal from last year.
If there is one player coming into nationals with momentum it is 3/4 seed Matthew Waring. Last month Waring ended his junior career on the ultimate high; an U19 European medal and his second U19 Scottish National Junior boys singles title with just a few days of each other. Waring also medalled at the German Ruhr U19 International and the All England Junior Badminton Championships in 2024. With a silver medal from the 2023 National Champs losing to Smith and a quarterfinal in 2024 losing to fellow 3/4 seed James Robertson, will Waring’s newfound taste for the podium spur him all the way?
James Robertson is at 3/4 seed and never one to be underestimated, especially in the nationals setting consistently reaching semi finals for the past five years. His competing last year featured Belgium, Latvia, Hungary as well as closer to home in Ireland and Wales where he moved through four rounds of qualification in Cardiff to make it to the main draw. Having bested Meldrum and Waring in previous nationals, is this the year that Robertson finally gets his final?
Women’s Singles
Rachel Sugden will be defending her 2024 Scottish National Championship title in the Womens Singles as top seed. After best Lauren Middleton in the final last year Sugden had some fantastic International runs and games from gaining valuable experience from facing Olympic Champion Caroline Marin in the European Championships, a quarterfinal in Latvia and a medal in Bulgaria. Having just won the Iceland International just last weekend Sugden will be on a high and looking to continue that on.
Katrina Chan is off the back of taking her first U19 Girls Singles National Title in December and is second seed at Nationals for the first time. She took her first win of the 2025 in the Babolat Dunfermline Championships in the women’s singles earlier this month.
Pranavi Singh and Vibha Raman are in at 3/4 seeds. Raman was in the final with Chan at the Dunfermline Championships and the Under 19 Girls Singles final, taking both games to a three ender. Raman made it to the semi finals at last years Scottish Nationals, losing out to Sugden. For Singh this is her first time seeded at the Scottish Nationals, playing last year and being knocked out by Vibha Raman.
Men’s Doubles
Chris and Matt Grimley sit as top seeds once again looking to go back to back from their first Gold in the mens doubles at Nationals. The twins will be as exciting as ever to watch with their performances in 2024 continuing to improve. With a bronze at the Polish Open and a Silver at the Irish Open the doubles pair were also consistently in the final eight for many of their tournaments including a great run at the Canada Open.
Angus Meldrum and Adam Pringle are second seeded – a new combination for this years Nationals. Last year Pringle was second seeded with Jack Macgregor making the semi finals and Meldrum was 5/8 seeded alongside Anthony Mcguire. Pringle has competed internationally alongside Alex Dunn in the mens doubles including a semi final at the Scottish Open and a quarterfinal at the Hylo Open.
At 3/4 seed are Callum Crangle and Josh Taylor, and Lewis Coghill and Evan Kenny. At the 2024 Nationals Kenny played with Taylor and Crangle played with Calum Flockhart. Coghill has just finished his junior career winning the U19 boys doubles alongside Matthew Waring and will be looking to make a splash as he now enters his senior career. Both pairings are relatively new together and will be looking to cause an upset across the draw.
Women’s Doubles
In the womens doubles going for their sixth title together Ciara Torrance and Julie Macpherson are top seeded. Last year they won their first title together taking gold at the Belgian International, not dropping a single set. Torrance had been out injured at the start of the year so the title win in September put them back on track for battling for top podium spots across the world with the Nationals being no exception.
Toni Woods and Holly Newall are second seeded and similar to other entries had a fantastic performance at the Babolat Dunfermline Championships earlier in the month winning the womens doubles. Neither of the pair competed last year so their impact on the draw could be monumental.
Mixed Doubles
New pairing Julie Macpherson and Adam Pringle are at the top of the pack. Both players have been around the international circuit across the season with their experience going to play a key role in competing against a wide variety of players and combinations both in the seeded entries and wider. Last year Pringle and Macpherson both reached semifinals with different partners: Julie with Ciar Pringle, and Adam with Rachel Andrew.
Second seeds Chris Grimley and Ciara Torrance are a historic pairing who used to compete together regularly in the junior circuit and have begun to play again together internationally. Both played in the Nationals last year again with different partners (Grimley with Eleanor O’Donnell and Torrance with Jack Macgregor).
Under 19 Irish Open winner Brooke Stalker is pairing up with Irish Open silver medallist Matthew Grimley as the 3/4 seeds. Stalker just finished her junior career winning the Under 19s Mixed Doubles with Lewis Coghill, and has played with Grimley before including last years nationals losing out in the first round against first seeds Adam Pringle and Rachel Andrew.
Finally Jack Macgregor and Toni Woods make up the final seeding of the draw, again a relatively fresh pairing but both experienced on the Scottish circuit in both mixed and single gendered doubles. Last year Woods alongside partner Calum Flockhart lost out to Macgregor and partner Ciara Torrance in the Nationals quarterfinals but are now pairing up to compete for the title.
