The Scottish National Junior Championships U15/19 draw has been announced

The 2024 Scottish National Junior Badminton Championships U15 / U19 takes place this weekend at the Cockburn Centre. The draw has been announced with Scotland best young talent battling it out for the trophy.

Under 15s

Boys’ Singles:
In the U15 boys’ singles, Charlie Junnor leads the pack as the first seed. Junnor won his first European medal in September alongside doubles partner Alfie Martin and will be looking to better his semi-final from last years Nationals.

Winner of the Glasgow Junior Championship U15, Callum Tsang, is the second seed, with Dylan Jia and Reyansh Arora as the 3/4 seeds.

Girls’ Singles:
Last year’s silver medallist, Jaagruti Mannem, is the top seed. Earlier this year, Mannem represented Scotland in the Shonai U16 International Badminton Invitational in Japan and recently won the Glasgow U17 Championship as well as the East of Scotland U19 women’s singles.

Shreya Vargheese, last year’s girls’ singles semi-finalist, is seeded second, with Emily Jobson and Elona Kennedy at 3/4. Jobson and Kennedy were finalists in the East of Scotland U15 girls’ singles Championship, where Jobson claimed gold after a hard-fought three-set match.

Mixed Doubles:
Charlie Junnor and Jaagruti Mannem team up as first seeds, having recently reached the quarter-finals of the U17 Nationals and won the XD U15 West of Scotland. Nathan Luo and Elona Kennedy are seeded second.

Boys’ Doubles:
The top two seeds in boys’ doubles met in October at the East of Scotland U15 BD final, where Nathan Luo and Callum Tsang defeated Dylan Jia and Melrick Dsouza. At Nationals, Jia and Dsouza are the top seeds, with Luo and Tsang seeded second. Kaliq Rafiddi/Yingfan Wang and Reyansh Arora round out the 3/4 seeds.

Girls’ Doubles:
Jaagruti Mannem and Shreya Vargheese are the top seeds after winning the girls’ doubles at the West of Scotland U17 and taking silver in the Glasgow Junior Championship U17. New pairing Emma Joshua and Flo Kirkpatrick are seeded second.


Under 19s

Boys’ Singles:
In the U19 boys’ singles, Matthew Waring leads as the top seed, fresh off winning a European bronze medal at the Junior Championships. His fellow European Junior Championship teammates round out the seeds, with Lewis Smith at second and Lingyun Xiao and Alfie Martin at 3/4. Smith recently reached the round of 32 at the Denmark Junior U17 and defeated Xiao in the East of Scotland U19 final. Junior Performance Athlete of the Year 2024, Alfie Martin, moves up to U19 after winning the U15 boys’ singles at Nationals last year.

Girls’ Singles:
The U19 girls’ singles is also led by European Junior Championships competitors, with reigning National Champion Vibha Raman seeded first and Katrina Chan second. Both players impressed at the Europeans, progressing from a draw of 128 to the round of 32. Pranavi Singh and Deepti Vijayakumar, who faced off in last year’s National semi-final, are the 3/4 seeds, with Singh advancing to the final in that encounter.

Mixed Doubles:
Irish U19 mixed doubles gold medallists Lewis Coghill and Brooke Stalker are the top seeds in their Scottish National debut. Last year, Stalker placed second with Daniel Harris, while Coghill finished 3/4 with Katrina Chan. This year, Chan partners with Alfie Martin as second seeds—a new pairing that won two matches at the Europeans. Lewis Smith teams up with Lanna Campbell, and Blair Tait partners with Deepti Vijayakumar as the 3/4 seeds.

Boys’ Doubles:
Matthew Waring makes a rare appearance in the men’s doubles, teaming up with Lewis Coghill as the top seeds. Alfie Martin and Lewis Smith are seeded second, rekindling a long-standing partnership from their childhood. Blair Tait and Lingyun Xiao, as well as Thomas Fragell and Arnav Saraswat, are the 3/4 seeds.

Girls’ Doubles:
Reigning National Champions Ishbel McCallister and Brooke Stalker are the first seeds, following their gold medal at the U19 Irish Open earlier this year and their participation in the European Championships this week. Eva Tremble and Vibha Raman, who also competed at the Europeans, are seeded second. Tremble was last year’s silver medallist, partnering with Amy Craig at the time.
