“This just shows Badminton isn’t a sport that finishes when you leave school” – 121 competitors at the Scottish Masters Nationals shows a bright future for the group

With 121 players competing across 8 age divisions and 40 events the Scottish Masters Nationals was hailed a great success in many different ways. This marked the largest Masters Nationals in recent years and showed the growth of masters badminton in Scotland.

Scotland’s best masters players have been all around Europe from Belgium to Denmark and also across the border in to England recently but the Scottish Nationals mark an important highlight in the calendar.

Speaking to President of Badminton Scotland and Masters player Colin Campbell, he was pleased with how the Masters Badminton is developing.

“The Masters badminton is very buoyant right now we’ve had playing that have never played comepetive tournaments before and they’ve really enjoyed it.”

The growth of masters badminton has been incredibly impressive with Campbell crediting outstanding individuals for it as well as improved communications.

“We have a Whatsapp group and that has a lot of people on it as well as the Scottish Masters Facebook and Instagram pages putting up posts. A lot of people keep playing badminton at club level and then realise they can actually perform at national level tournaments and not be out of place.”

“It shows that Badminton isn’t a sport that finishes when you leave school or even international badminton at a senior level. We’ve had to extend age groups up to 70 and I wouldn’t be surprised if we have to add in 75 in the future.”

Preparations for the Masters Internationals are well underway in January with entries closing in December with what promises to be another brilliant weekend of badminton.
