Top seed Jakobsen overcomes Huang Ching Ping to claim Scottish Open title

Denmark’s Julie Dawall Jakobsen secured the 2024 Scottish Open Women’s Singles Trophy, beating Huang Ching Ping of Chinese Taipei 21, 21 to 19, 16.

Jakobsen said: “It feels good to end the season with a win, I’m ready for the Christmas holiday now with this good feeling!”

Whilst Jakobsen came into the match as the top seed and arguable favourite, Ping had actually triumphed in their only previous meeting in Slovenia last year.

This win clearly gave Ping confidence early on as the pair traded points, with Jakobsen dominating the back-court and Ping in control of the net.

Jakobsen had a noticeable power advantage over her opponent, allowing her to enjoy success through smashes, but Ping’s more deft approach at the net kept her in as many rallies as she lost.

With the score at 11 to 10 in favour of Jakobsen at the interval, Ping returned with two smashes of her own as the set continued to be close.

However, strong back-court play from Jakobsen took her within a serve of the set, with Ping hitting out to concede the match advantage to the Dane at 21 to 19.

The second set began in Ping’s preferred domain, with netplay taking the early score to three a piece.

The number one seed was able to wrestle advantage away from her opponent, though, taking an 11 to 5 lead at the interval.

Two incredible dives from Ping helped her to battle back to within two points of Jakobsen, but the European Championship bronze medalist showed her class to storm into a 20 to 16 lead.

A misplaced drop shot from Ping was enough to secure Jacobsen the victory and the 2024 Scottish Open Women’s Singles title.
