U17 European Junior Championships – Team Event Review
2nd December 2025 by Robert McLean
Scotland’s young squad brought their U17 European Junior Championships Team Event campaign to a spirited close, delivering a thrilling 3–2 victory over a strong Croatian side. After a challenging run of defeats to Hungary, Bulgaria, and Sweden, the team showed outstanding resilience and determination to finish their group stage on a positive note.
With the tie balanced at 2–2, all eyes turned to the decisive mixed doubles match. The Scottish pairing of Max McCabe and Qing Yang Xiao rose to the occasion, producing some of their finest badminton of the week. Their composed and clinical performance earned them a straight-games win over Croatia’s Marko Šurina and Maja Pranjić, securing the match 21–15, 21–16 and giving Scotland a well-deserved final group victory.
Although Scotland’s journey in the Team Event ended at the group stage, the closing win showcased the squad’s talent, depth, and fighting spirit, an encouraging sign for the future.
Focus Shifts to Individual Events
There’s little time for reflection as attention now turns to the Individual Championships, beginning tomorrow. Scotland’s campaign kicks off with Boys’ Singles action:
-
Arnav Saraswat – Scheduled 4th on Court 2, taking on Poland’s Jakub Mazurek.
-
Calum Tsang – Opening the day first on Court 5 against Finland’s Sam Lindberg.
The remainder of the Scottish squad will take to the courts in the coming days as they look to build on the momentum from the Team Event and make their mark across the individual draws.
