VICTOR Denmark Open: Day 2 Review

14th October by Robert McLean

It was a tough day for our Scots competing in Odense, Denmark, as they faced world-class opposition at the VICTOR Denmark Open.

First on court were Alex and Julie, who faced the daunting challenge of taking on the world’s number three mixed doubles pairing and Europe’s top-ranked duo, Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje. Despite battling hard across both games, the Danes demonstrated exactly why they are among the elite pairings on the world tour, taking the match in straight games, 21-12, 21-10.

Julie returned to the court in one of the final matches of the day, partnering Ciara in the women’s doubles against Hong Kong’s Yeung and Yeung, the world number 19 pairing. The opening game was a competitive affair, with the Hong Kong duo edging ahead to take it 21-16.

Unfortunately, the second game got off to a difficult start for Julie and Ciara, who lost the opening six points. Despite their efforts to fight back, they were unable to put enough pressure on their opponents, with Yeung and Yeung closing out the game 21-13 to secure the match in straight games.

While the results were not what our players would have hoped for, competing against some of the world’s best provides valuable experience on badminton’s biggest stages. With a relentless international schedule, there is little time to dwell on the defeats, as the team now turns its attention to the next challenge.

The Scots head to Tremblay, in the suburbs of Paris, for the Yonex French Open, which gets underway on Tuesday, bringing another opportunity to showcase their talents against the world’s best.

A massive thank you once again to National Coach Robert Blair for his continued efforts and support throughout the tournaments in Denmark and Finland over the past week.

Onwards to France!
