Yonex Bonn International – Review

1st June 2026 by Robert McLean

A strong week of competition at the Yonex Bonn International saw Scottish players gain valuable international experience, highlighted by an impressive run to the quarter-finals from Matthew Waring as he continues to establish himself on the senior international circuit.

Waring began his campaign in the qualifying rounds, navigating a challenging draw to secure his place in the main draw. His opening main draw match saw him face Belgium’s Yaro Van Delsen, ranked World No. 262, in a high-quality and closely contested encounter. After dropping the first game 18-21, Waring showed resilience and tactical composure to recover strongly, taking the next two games 21-17, 21-13 to progress to the last 16.

In the round of 16, Waring continued his strong form against Poland’s Danielak (World No. 308). Maintaining control in key phases of the match, he secured a straight-games victory 21-18, 21-19, booking his place in the quarter-finals of a senior international tournament for the first time in his recent progression.

Waring’s run came to an end in the last eight, where he faced his toughest opponent of the week in Dutch player Haase, ranked World No. 159. Despite a determined performance, Waring was unable to consistently break down the higher-ranked opponent, with Haase taking the match 21-11, 21-14. The result concluded a highly encouraging tournament showing and provided further experience at a higher competitive level.

In the doubles events, Brooke Stalker and Ishbel McCallister produced a solid run to the last 16. The pair opened their campaign with a strong straight-games victory over Dutch duo Spiering and Kloppenburg before facing France’s Bauer and Raffin. The French pair proved stronger on the day, winning 21-5, 21-17 to bring the Scottish pair’s run to a close.

Elsewhere, credit is due to all Scottish athletes competing across the event, including Angus Meldrum, Finlay Jack, and Xiaozhu Jiang, who each gained valuable experience on the international stage.

Overall, the Yonex Bonn International provided a positive week for the Scottish squad, with encouraging performances across multiple events and clear indicators of progress as athletes continue their development on the European circuit.
