Yonex Canada Open Preview

30th June 2026 by Robert McLean

Scotland’s top badminton stars are in Markham, Canada this week for the Yonex Canada Open, an HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 event.

Action gets underway today, with plenty of Scottish interest on the opening day as the national squad begins its campaign against strong international opposition.

Alex Dunn and Adam Pringle have been handed one of the toughest opening draws in the men’s doubles. The Scottish pair will take on top seeds Presley Smith and Yi Zhi Chen of the United States in their first-ever meeting on the BWF World Tour. Ranked world number 28, the American duo will provide a formidable challenge, with Dunn and Pringle needing to produce one of their best performances to progress. Their match is scheduled as the eighth contest on Court 3.

Immediately afterwards, Julie MacPherson and Ciara Torrance begin their women’s doubles campaign against Brazil’s Lima sisters. The Brazilian pair have enjoyed a solid season, compiling an 8-5 record together in 2026, and will present another stern opening-round test for the Scots.

The final Scottish involvement on day one sees brothers Matthew and Christopher Grimley face Lin and Lin of Chinese Taipei. The young Taiwanese partnership has climbed to world number 70 and arrives in good form, ensuring another highly competitive opening-round encounter.

Attention then turns to the mixed doubles on Wednesday, where Alex Dunn and Julie MacPherson get their campaign underway.

Supporting the Scottish team throughout the week is National Head Coach Ingo Kindervater as the squad looks to make its mark at one of the key events on the HSBC BWF World Tour.
