Yonex Dutch Open – Scottish Stars Shine in ‘s‑Hertogenbosch
6th October 2025 by Robert McLean
It was an eventful week for Scotland’s emerging badminton talent at the Yonex Dutch Open, part of the International Challenge circuit, held in ’s‑Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. With strong performances, personal milestones, and valuable experience gained, the tournament marked a positive step forward for the Scots on the European stage.
Smith Impresses with Last 16 Run
Leading the Scottish charge was Callum Smith, who impressed in the men’s singles with a confident run to the last 16. Smith opened his campaign with a commanding straight‑games victory over Switzerland’s Julien Scheiwiller (WR 161), winning 21‑19, 21‑8 in an assured performance.
In the next round, Smith came up against Enogat Roy of France, a rising star ranked 94 in the world. In what proved to be one of the matches of the round, Callum pushed the Frenchman all the way in a thrilling opening set, narrowly losing 27‑29. Roy edged ahead in the second to close out the match 21‑17, but Smith can take great pride in his showing, continuing to establish himself at international level.
Raman Makes International Debut
It was also a tournament to remember for Vibha Raman, who made her International Challenge debut in the women’s singles. Up against local favourite Esmerelda van Drunen, Raman showed no signs of nerves and delivered a competitive performance, pushing the Dutch player hard in both sets before going down 21‑17, 21‑18. A promising start at this level, and a sign of more to come.
Aamir Gains Experience in Qualifying
Elsewhere, Shaun Ally Aamir featured in the men’s singles qualifying but was unable to advance, falling to Dutch player Dennis Koppen 21‑9, 21‑8. Despite the early exit, the experience will prove valuable as Aamir continues to develop on the international circuit.
