Yonex US Open Review

29th June 2026 by Robert McLean

It was a mixed week for Scotland’s representatives at the Yonex US Open in Fullerton, California.

Alistair Casey and his American partner, Mat Fogarty, were handed one of the toughest possible opening qualifying matches against the second-seeded Japanese pairing of Goto and Yoshida. The Japanese duo demonstrated their quality throughout, securing a 21-12, 21-6 victory to end Casey and Fogarty’s campaign at the qualifying stage.

There was a much brighter start for Scotland’s Matt and Chris Grimley. The twins were in imperious form in their opening-round match, producing an outstanding performance to defeat Canada’s Lai and Mak 21-5, 21-6 and book their place in the second round.

Awaiting them there was another stern test against the talented Danish brothers Christian Kjær and Rasmus Kjær. The rising Danish pair proved simply flawless on the day, controlling the match from start to finish to claim a 21-14, 21-7 victory.

There is little time for the Grimley twins to dwell on their US Open campaign, however, as they have already made the journey north to Canada, where they will begin their Canada Open campaign when the tournament gets underway tomorrow.
