Young Scottish Stars Eye Breakthrough at Spanish U19 International 2025
5th June 2025 by Robert McLean
Scotland’s next generation of badminton talent is set to make its mark in Alicante this week, as four rising stars prepare to compete in the prestigious Spanish U19 International 2025. With play scheduled to begin tomorrow, all eyes will be on how these young athletes perform on the European stage.
Kicking off Scotland’s campaign is Lewis Smith, who will open proceedings in the Boys’ Singles draw against Poland’s Tomasz Koperdowski (BWF Junior Rank: 436) in a round of 64 clash scheduled for 11:00am GMT. Smith will be looking to get off to a strong start and build momentum in the early rounds.
Later in the afternoon, Blair Tait will take to the court in his Boys’ Singles tie against Norway’s Henrik Frende Lavik-Haug (BWF Junior Rank: 386). That match is set for 1:30pm GMT, and Tait will be aiming to bring his trademark energy and consistency to the fore.
The evening session shifts focus to the Boys’ Doubles, where Scotland’s pairings will face stiff competition. At 6:00pm GMT, Alfie Sweeney and Lucas Chin square off against Spanish duo Quique Gil and Alejandro Yaycarov, who will have home-court advantage and local crowd support.
Closing out the day’s action is a challenging fixture for Blair Tait and Lewis Smith, who will team up to take on the highly rated Malaysian pair Hau Jay Lim and Tan Nicholas — a tough test but one that promises thrilling badminton.
As the tournament unfolds, we’ll be following every serve, smash, and rally. We wish the very best of luck to Lewis, Blair, Alfie, and Lucas as they fly the flag for Scotland in Spain.
